All Systems Red

I was hoping that this would get a little bit more of a story climax than it had, but I definitely am finding myself thinking about the storyline of this and I'd definitely be interested in reading more of the series. Between this and Psalm for the Wild-Built, I think I can enjoy robot fiction but it's just not entirely up my alley!

Night Of The Mannequins

This was a very interesting read and my first experience with an unreliable narrator. To be honest, I almost DNF'ed this because the main character, who is a high school teenager, was very rambling in his narration. It was as if his narrative style was 90% rambling with only 10% of the actual plot threaded through what he was saying. However, when I got to Chapter 4 or 5, the whole thing started to come together for me, and I could see a path that the story could or would take. While I'm only giving it 3 stars, I'm honestly glad I read it! It gave me a new horror reading experience that I didn't expect.

Jackal

I don't read a lot of mystery but this was so interesting and so gripping! A perfect interaction of supernatural, historical fiction, and contemporary topics that it made a really fantastical story that you so desperately wanted to know the ending all the way through. And a very satisfying ending at that!! Maybe I'll have to pick up more mystery next time I'm at the library

Out There Screaming

I love short story compilations most days but I loved the variety in topic and style from all of the different authors! There are some that I wish were entire books, and there were some that I found other books by the authors to add to my reading list. So glad I got this one off thr shelf.

Bloody Irish

This book was labeled as a non-fiction but it definitely read more like a fiction set of short stories! A quick and easy read with some nice spooky stories perfect for a campfire.

Empire Of Pain

Yet again, another home run from Patrick Radden Keefe. Another book of his that i just could not put down and now will never see the world the same! Delightful to read a book like this up against the backdrop of New York, reflecting on the worlds of "Sackler" that I've wandered through without ever knowing the name. After finishing this book, I called up a friend who works in cancer research to discuss Big Pharma, because this book brought so much to my attention that I had no idea about, like patents, copyrighting, and naming of drugs to monopolize the market. Been recommending this book to anyone who will listen!

Strange Houses

What a fun quick read!! I loved the repeated prints of the house layouts so you never forgot the images to make the story more intriguing. I wish it was longer!!

Through The Woods

This is a graphic novel that contains 5 short horror stories. E.M. Carroll is fantastic at creating tension and terror through their use of illustrations, color, and shadow. Their stories are moody and atmospheric; a great read for either Summerween (this is entry #1 for my current Summerween reading challenge) OR for Halloween. Be forewarned: there are elements of body horror in this collection.

Remina

Junji Ito does it again! This is perhaps my first standalone I've read from Ito; I'm more familiar with his short story collections. This is an absolutely horrifying tale of a planet from another dimension that crosses into our realm and makes a devastating approach to Earth, destroying everything in its path. This is a story that goes hard in both its storytelling and its visuals.

Ring

I understand why some people dislike this book upon reading it presently, but I think it is wrong to apply 2020s American morals to a 1991 Japanese (translated!) novel. This book was the type to fly through, because you never realized you just ate up 100 pages because you were having too much fun. Spooky and mysterious, it read as a perfect mystery novel that still gave me some surprises even after seeing and knowing the movie Ringu (1997). I'm really excited to see what the rest of the series holds!
