Empire Of Pain
by Patrick Radden Keefe

Yet again, another home run from Patrick Radden Keefe. Another book of his that i just could not put down and now will never see the world the same! Delightful to read a book like this up against the backdrop of New York, reflecting on the worlds of "Sackler" that I've wandered through without ever knowing the name. After finishing this book, I called up a friend who works in cancer research to discuss Big Pharma, because this book brought so much to my attention that I had no idea about, like patents, copyrighting, and naming of drugs to monopolize the market. Been recommending this book to anyone who will listen!

Night Of The Mannequins

This was a very interesting read and my first experience with an unreliable narrator. To be honest, I almost DNF'ed this because the main character, who is a high school teenager, was very rambling in his narration. It was as if his narrative style was 90% rambling with only 10% of the actual plot threaded through what he was saying. However, when I got to Chapter 4 or 5, the whole thing started to come together for me, and I could see a path that the story could or would take. While I'm only giving it 3 stars, I'm honestly glad I read it! It gave me a new horror reading experience that I didn't expect.

This was such a fun book! I loved other books in this Meant to Be series so I was really excited for the Mulan story. Despite the secondhand embarrassment, it was so funny and a really sweet love story, it was amazing! I'll definitely have to finish out the rest in this series

The Message

I knew this was a collection of essays but I did not realize that most of the book was an essay about Palestine and the oppression and colonization of Palestinians. It was incredible, well-written and addresses the situation using American and global historical context to understand the present day suffering. I've really enjoyed Ta-Nehisi Coates in the past, but I commend him here for his clarity, objectivity, and bravery for speaking up.

This was a really beautiful story, and even though one of my best friends is Nigerian, I found myself learning some really fun new things about Nigerian culture from the setting of this book. Tragic, but a really well written depiction of grief.

I love short story compilations most days but I loved the variety in topic and style from all of the different authors! There are some that I wish were entire books, and there were some that I found other books by the authors to add to my reading list. So glad I got this one off thr shelf.

I LOVED this book! A very quick and easy read although I didn't much take a break after I started, it was addictive. Not only were these all very foundational shows for me, it was so great to get all of the background knowledge of the showrunners and their journeys to create teen stories. It made me want to go back and rewatch every single show!

Through The Woods

This is a graphic novel that contains 5 short horror stories. E.M. Carroll is fantastic at creating tension and terror through their use of illustrations, color, and shadow. Their stories are moody and atmospheric; a great read for either Summerween (this is entry #1 for my current Summerween reading challenge) OR for Halloween. Be forewarned: there are elements of body horror in this collection.

This book was labeled as a non-fiction but it definitely read more like a fiction set of short stories! A quick and easy read with some nice spooky stories perfect for a campfire.

I had no idea that this was based on an H.P. Lovecraft story but I was totally drawn in, especially by the historic depictions of New York. I both loved that it was short, keeping some mystery and intrigue to the ending, and wished that it was twice as long to learn more about the strange magic!!
